Community Gardens
Garden Opening
Today we celebrated the opening of our community garden. Yes, it is snowing outside but this spring is proving unpredictable. Tulips, daffodils and iris are poking out of the ground and the fruit trees are in bud. Lillie’s and garlic are up in the garden and I am pretty sure it is not yet time to plant pollinators. Never-the-less we celebrated and planted. Curious?
Yes we planted but inside so that the children and participants remained warm followed by a coffee hour. Plan on visiting our gardens at 1907 King Street East, Faith Lutheran church. All are welcome. Enjoy the really great pictures.
Seedy Saturday February 6
Those eagerly waiting for spring, those who love to eat, those who are serious of the environment and garden lovers of all kind gathered Saturday February 6 at McMaster Innovation Park, 175 Longwood Road for the popular annual seed and garden exchange. Lots of people just kept coming into the lovely glass ceiling atrium to enjoy the event. Great seed, garden and food prep information, lots of fresh grown food, seminars, kids activity corner and the ever popular seed exchange attracted people and kids of all ages. What a fabulous event! We answered questions, distributed material and had a grand time. Did not get to the event this year? Not too early to add to your next year calendar! See you there!
Bartonville Community Garden Season Wrap up
To say it has been a grand gardening year is indeed an understatement. It has been the best year to date with lots of abundant produce for our food programs and for sharing with our neighbours and food banks. The most fantastic kale, several varieties of chard, fabulous blight free varieties of orange, yellow and red tomatoes, great cabbage, herbs, garlic and zucchini. All in all a fabulous year enjoyed by the volunteer gardeners, plot holders and summer interns. We are busy planning for the next season and it begins with Seedy Saturday February 6, 2016 at the McMaster Innovation Park. Look for us, we hope to see you there!
Summer Bounty
Bartonville Neighbourhood Community Garden and Urban Orchard enjoy the benefits of a long hot summer. Fruits and vegetables are abundant and used in our summer food program. Perhaps you visited or ate with us! Excess produce is donated to local food programs for kids and families. Harvest of squash and apples has begun. Want to help? Call 905 549 5550, Faith Lutheran Church, or email faithchurchinformation@gmail.com. All welcome!
